Cooper Kupp, Jonathan Taylor, Josh Allen, even Matthew Stafford. All of these names have legitimate credibility when we talk about who can win the NFL MVP Award. As we look at the body of work this past NFL season has given to us, we can now clearly see that only two names matter; Brady and Rodgers.
I had originally planned to write a preview of some of the playoff matchups, but I felt it wouldn’t be an article that would really have any substance to it. Instead, I opted for writing on the topic that is on the mind of every NFL fan at the moment; Brady vs Rodgers. Both have 3 past NFL MVP wins, and both had outstanding seasons this past year.
For Brady, one of the main arguments against him getting the MVP award is the supporting cast around him. Does Brady have a lot of help with the offense? Absolutely! But that argument is still ludicrous, seeing as Brady is 44 years old and led almost all the passing categories this year. Let that sink in for a second; 44, and leading the passing categories! I think Bruce Arians summed it up best this past week when he said that “it’s not even close” while describing how Tom Brady should be the unanimous MVP winner.
Just read this stat line; 5316 passing yards (1st), 43 touchdowns (1st), 102.1 passer rating, and a 65.7% completion rating; all at the age of 44! Supporting cast or nor, someone had to throw that ball and get it into the hands of the receiver. That argument doesn’t even ring true anymore because of the amount injuries the Buccaneers have had to deal with these past weeks. Even with his top receivers out (Godwin, Evans for a while, Brown) Brady still pulled together wins!
Now I am also a fan of Aaron Rodgers, because, quite honestly, I think he is the Rolls Royce of football; precise, efficient, and a class above the rest. I think Aaron Rodgers being Tom Brady’s direct opponent for this MVP race only reinforces the argument of why Tom Brady should win the MVP. I mean, the man is 44 years old and is going head-to-head with Aaron Rodgers of all people for an MVP award.
Rodgers posted great stats as well; 4115 passing yards, 37 touchdowns, and a passer rating of 111.9. Rodgers always manages to impress me whenever he plays, and if he stays healthy, I could really see him doing what Brady has done in the NFL (playing and dominating into his mid-40s). I don’t think there is a better opponent for Tom Brady to go up against in this MVP hunt. In saying that, I do think Rodgers will be a runner-up. You just can’t argue against Brady’s greatness and stature this season.
Who do you think the MVP should be? Let me know in the comments below!
