This NFL offseason has been unlike any other in recent memory. From the largest quarterback carousel in NFL history to free-agency dealings that have transformed the league as a whole, the NFL we saw last season will be much different from the one we will be seeing next season.
That being said, I can’t help to think that the trades and signings are completely over and done with, as there are still some players whose careers with their current teams are completely up in the air. As the old saying goes, “what goes up, must come down”. So, here are the trades I’d love to see go down before the start of the NFL season. Enjoy!
Saquon Barkley Traded to a Contender
The Giants are the team I’ve loved since I was a young boy. Watching Eli Manning hail a bomb to David Tyree in the Super Bowl and defeat Tom Brady’s 16-0 Patriots solidified me as a Giants fan for life. Like most marriages, I didn’t know what I was getting into when I first signed up for it, and after the honeymoon period was over (I’d say that ended after the Giants won their Super Bowl in 2011), it’s been anything but smooth sailing since.
Hey, I still support them, and proudly say that I’m a Giants fan when asked, but the games are a bore to watch, and the honest truth is, they’re not a good football team and haven’t been for a while. Now, I’m not here to comment on the state of the team and whether they are a contender or not, but rather, to lend a helping hand in a trade idea that might help him.
Namely, I’m talking about our running back Saquon Barkley, who, when healthy, is unstoppable, but has dealt with injury-riddled seasons that have plagued his career. Listen, Barkley is an amazing football player, but the reason he gets injured all the time is that the Giants are relying on him as the savior. They see him as the Detroit Lions saw Barry Sanders. Barkley is good but he isn’t meant to carry a team like that.
What Barkley needs is to be traded to a contender, one who will have him be part of a RB duo, such as Tampa Bay has with Fournette and Jones II. Throw him into a roster that has that game plan, and you will see his game flourish.
Baker to the Lions
The Lions. The laughingstock of the NFL. Last year was egregious, to put it nicely. A lot of their struggles had to do with their starting quarterback, Jared Goff. The former Rams QB just wasn’t performing at a level that was sustainable, even for a franchise like Detroit. Is he a good quarterback? Yes. Is he on the wrong team (again)? Yes.
The Lions have nothing to lose in trying to trade for Baker. Mayfield overplayed his hand in Cleveland, found himself as the odd-man-out, and now the Browns have no real leverage in trade negotiations if they were to trade Baker because they’ve already found their QBs in Deshaun Watson and Jacoby Brissett.
The QB could use a fresh start, and obviously has a lot to prove still. The Lions are in desperate need of a QB. I think this would be a perfect marriage (for the time being).
DK Metcalf to the Rams
Metcalf is a staple in Seattle, and rightfully so. He combines the strength, height, and athleticism you can only get when you’re creating a player in a Madden video game. The scary thing is that he’s a real human being.
If the Rams want to repeat as Super Bowl champs in this ever-changing NFL landscape, they will have to do more than just have Cooper Kupp and Allen Robinson on their receiving corps. That is where DK Metcalf steps in. Could you imagine Stafford throwing bombs down the field to Metcalf? I can, and it looks absolutely glorious!
