Russell Westbrook is coming off a down season, one where Lakers fans were merciless in their criticisms of him and his game. It got so bad at some points that Russ confessed that his family was receiving death threats. Obviously the L. A – Russ experiment didn’t work out, even though he was playing in his hometown. Sometimes I guess you do have to forget where you came from.
Westbrook is still a premier scorer in the NBA and is arguably the most intense player to grace the courts of the NBA in today’s game. So with the L.A experiment not panning out, and the Lakers probably looking to trade Russ, what are some trade destinations that could work out for the one-time league MVP. Without further ado, let’s jump in and see where he fits in most.
Charlotte Hornets
Charlotte is the most exciting team in the NBA in today’s game. Blessed with an elite roster of young talent, the Hornets are explosive, clutch, and a whole lot of fun. Westbrook’s style of play fits perfectly into what the Hornets are trying to accomplish; a fast-paced game built on flair.
A ferocious dunker whose athleticism actually hinders his jump shot, Westbrook would fit in right away with the Hornets. His “slasher” style of play would be exactly what the Hornets need, as Westbrook would allow for either LaMelo Ball or Miles Bridges to be left open if he attacks the rim as he normally does. Even linking up with Montrzl Harrel would be a welcome to Westbrook, who benefits from playing with elite big-men (Steven Adams in OKC).
All in all, I would love to see Westbrook on the Hornets, as I think he can get back to his previous form while playing in a city where the media attention isn’t as cynical as it is in L.A.
New York Knicks
When you think of the words “intense”, “energy”, and “adrenaline”, it’s hard not to think of the city that never sleeps; New York City baby! The Big Apple would fit in perfectly with Russel Westbrook’s personality, and although New York is just as big a media market as L.A, I think New Yorkers would appreciate the effort Russ puts on the court every single night, and be lenient in their criticisms. Then again, it’s New York City, so I could be wrong.
I’m not exactly sure who the Knicks would trade for Russ, but why not an L.A reunion with Julius Randle. The former Laker has proven he can thrive in huge media markets, and with the Lakers on the verge of a partial rebuild, could the Lakers trade for the player who could be a solid third scoring option for the Lakeshow? Who knows, all I know is this trade would be great for both teams, as they’d be sending off pieces that underperformed for them last season.
Detroit Pistons
What do the Pistons have to lose in bringing Russ on? The team has been one of the worst teams of the 2010’s, and has been even worse in the 2020’s. Russ could bring some energy that the Detroit-based team is lacking at the current moment. Although Detroit has some nice young talent on the roster, I think they could benefit from the experience Russ would bring to the team.
This could also end up being a pretty nice deal for the Lakers, who might be able to pry Jerami Grant by sending over some 1st round picks (probably for the year 2027-2028). If the Lakers could pull it off, it would be a trade that could impact both teams for the point where they are at in their franchises rebuilding plans. Detroit looks like it’s only going to be competing in three years tops, while the Lakers need some instant fixes to soothe their L.A fanbase.
