The Houston Astros just obliterated the Chicago White Sox in a way that we don’t see very often. Houston wound up not even making it a competition, beating them 21-5. There were numerous players that were able to contribute to this stomping.
Alex Bregman and outfielder Chas McCormick completely led the charge for the Astros in this particular performance. They were able to drive in a combined 11 runs and helped tie a franchise record for most hits in a single game at a whopping 25. As for their 21 runs scored, this is the second most runs that they’ve totaled in a single game in their franchise’s history. The only total that surpasses this performance was when they dropped 23 against the Baltimore Orioles in 2019. That game also watched them smash away 25 hits.
Bregman Was A Difference Maker
McCormick was asked about his and the team’s big day and he had a strong response. He said, “We made a statement. We made a freaking statement. We have a good offense. They’re a good team. We were a little upset that they beat us the first two times.”
None of this might have happened if it weren’t for a particular controversial call early in the first inning. Bregman struck out on a 3-2 pitch that went under the strike zone. The Astros were so shocked at the ruling that it led to the ejection of their hitting coach, Alex Cintron. On top of that, their manager Dusty Baker was asked about what his reaction was to the call after the game. To which he responded, “I can’t tell you what I was saying. My mother wouldn’t like it. We all thought that it was low.” Even Bregman was clearly unhappy about the decision. He said, “I’m not going to say anything, because I don’t want to get fined.”
Don’t worry though, Bregman completely led the charge after this spark. His next appearance at the plate saw him smash a two-run double in the third running. He followed that up by hitting a two-run homer in the fourth inning and then another two-run homer in the sixth. That’s not even all, Bregman got on the board one last time by hitting another double in the ninth.
Astros Prove Their Dominance While White Sox Struggle
For the Astros, this was a phenomenal all-around performance that really proves how dangerous they can be when they’re hot. On the flip side, it might be a small cause for concern for the White Sox. You don’t want to be the team that gets smoked like this, allowing 21 runs in a single game. Chicago has been good lately, but this is certainly going to be a matchup that they will aim to forget moving forward.
Their starting pitcher, Lucas Giolito, was honest about the performance. He said, “You have to locate, and I didn’t do that. A lot of fastballs trying to go in and missing middle, stuff like that, and they didn’t miss. Gave up a lot of runs.” We are going to see how each of these teams respond to this game moving forward.
