At the halfway point of the 2020 NFL season, thing were looking down for the Philadelphia Eagles in almost every conceivable way. Through the first eight weeks of the season, the Eagles were 3-4-1. Not too bad from a spectators point of view. A lot of teams would kill to be just under .500 with their playoff hopes very much alive. But despite the solid record, it was more apparent than ever that the 2020 Eagles were a flimsy house of cards and we as fans just had to sit back and wait for that one jack to fall out of place and bring the whole tower to the ground; that eventually happened. The Eagles kicked off the second half of their season with a four game losing streak, effectively killing their playoff hopes as they plummeted to fourth in the mediocre NFC East.
Between Carson Wentz’ benching and Doug Pederson’s mediocrity there wasn’t much too marvel at in 2020. Poor record, poor coaching and a late season quarterback juggle doesn’t exactly inspire hope. However there was one prospect who came from seemingly nowhere and quickly became a fan favorite. That’s right, Travis Fulgham became a household name in Philadelphia when he caught what would end up being the game winning touchdown against the 49ers in week four. This win brought the Eagles to 1-2-1, which at the time was a big deal as it gave the Eagles their first win of the season. The catch against the 49ers lit a fire under Fulgham. Over the next four weeks he racked up at least seventy yards in every game, including a monstrous 13 reception, 152 yard performance against Pittsburgh.
During a season without much hope, Travis Fulgham showed undeniable flashes of potential. Or was it all just a fluke?
After his solid mid season stretch, Fulgham came back to earth and over the last seven games of the season, he really failed to recapture any of his previous momentum. A once guaranteed starter may now be on his way out of the city that once loved and embraced him.
Going into training camp Greg Ward and John Hightower were just two of the receivers who could potentially find themselves on the waiver wire as cuts continued. Travis Fulgham was not a name many expected to be truly fighting for a roster spot when training camp opened up.
Fulgham has had a less than stellar camp, and has remained shut out throughout the first two preseason games. With the new Sirianni regime in place Fulgham needs to show up or shut up if he hopes to suit up in the midnight green in 2021. For reference, J.J. Arcega-Whiteside, the same receiver who fans are demanding be cut, has the same statline as Fulgham throughout the preseason. 0 catches, for 0 yards. The only difference is one has the expectations of a third year draft bust while the other was expected to start. Those expectations to start better be revised and turned into an effort just to make the team. Jalen Reagor is a lock to make the team. After him it’s going to be a brutal, crowded war for the remaining roster spots in the Eagles receiver rooms. And unfortunately, Travis Fulgham now finds himself at the center of that bare-knuckle fight.
