Sports. Much like food, it’s something that can bring people together, even if they don’t speak the same language. Billions of dollars are made every single year off of sports, which means that people do carry their team rooting with a strong passion. Now if I ask everybody who they think is the best sports city, they would probably say the city they live in (unless you live in Cleveland). Personally, I cannot partake in this debate because even though I live in Montreal and we have the greatest NHL franchise of all time, we don’t have much else going for us sports-wise.
For this article, we will look at the amount of success their sports teams have had in the past 5 years, fan base passion, and the number of teams. So, which sports city of the past 5 years is going to take the #1 spot? Without further ado, let’s jump right in and see who takes the top spot.
#5 – Boston/New England
You know you’re lucky when you’re born into a city that houses the Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots, the Boston Celtics, and the Boston Bruins. With the Red Sox capturing the 2018 World Series, the New England Patriots capturing the 2019 SuperBowl, and the Bruins going to the Stanley Cup finals of that same exact year, Boston sports fans have been surrounded by winning these past five years.
Although the Celtics are one of the most talented NBA teams, they are having trouble developing chemistry, but that all comes with time. Even Kobe and Shaq first had issues developing chemistry when they first teamed up and look at what they ended up achieving together.
#4- Washington, DC
The Washington sports fans were in for a wild surprise in 2018 and 2019, as the Washington Capitals, led by their star captain Alexander Ovechkin, snapped one of the longest championship droughts in sports history and captured their first-ever franchise championship.
The very next year the Washington Nationals, led by star pitcher Max Scherzer, the franchise captured their first-ever championship. All in all, the DC area has been blessed with some sports success these past 5 years. The fan base is also very passionate, as Capitals games are always raucous and is one of the loudest NHL arenas to play in.
#3- Milwaukee
The number 3 spot has got to go to my boy Giannis and the city of Milwaukee. Giannis and I are both Greek, and I must say he brings immense pride to our mostly touristic country. The city of Milwaukee is supremely lucky to have such a class of an athlete and man like Giannis leading the way. It’s a real shame he was only taken with the 15th overall pick in his draft class. I’m sure fellow GM’s are still kicking themselves over that.
The Milwaukee is obviously one of the most passionate, as they consistently show up to Green Bay Packers games to cheer on the green and yellow, even in the extreme cold weather. This city’s football team always being one of the best, as well as the rise of the Bucks solidifies their ranking at the number 3 spot.
#2- Los Angeles
No city has been as diverse at winning championships in the last 5 years as Los Angeles. SuperBowl, World Series, and NBA Championships have all come out of the city in the last 5 years. The city is really becoming the mecca of powerful sports teams, and there is just no debating it. If you want to win, you go to L.A.
#1- Tampa Bay
The most winningest city in the past 5 years, Tampa Bay just does it differently. Pick your poison, we have powerhouses in the MLB, NHL, and NFL. 3 championships across all sports in 3 years, and definitely more to come, there’s not much else to say about the sports scene in Tampa Bay. We are Simply the best!
