The Detroit Lions, a franchise that has been around since the Great Depression, have never even been to a Super Bowl. I’ll repeat that for the people in the back who might not have heard, the Detroit Lions have never even been to a Super Bowl, and haven’t won a playoff game since 1991. That is unacceptable. Lions fans must all be masochists because supporting this franchise brings nothing but pain and suffering. My own brother is a Lions fan, and during games, we’ve watched I’ve wanted to reach out and hug him for what was happening on the field.
To put things into perspective, of just how bad this franchise is, Matthew Stafford was a Lion for 12 seasons, never even winning a playoff game. The first year he leaves for another team, he goes undefeated in the playoffs and wins a Super Bowl. I am convinced had he been drafted by another team he would have more than 1 Super Bowl ring right now. The Lions are just bad, plain and simple. But why are they so bad? Well, let’s take a look and see.
The first thing that comes to mind is ownership. If you want to see how successful a ball club is going to be, you first look at the owners and upper management. This will be the biggest indicator of if the team is going to be successful or not. The Lions are currently owned by the Ford family, and they seem to be stuck in the 1950s. Sheila Ford Hamp is the main owner and is a 70-year-old woman who doesn’t really know how to run a ball club, seeing as they haven’t been successful in years.
Their ways are stuck in the 1950s, and that just plain doesn’t work in this day and age. Hell, what worked in the 50s didn’t even work in the 60s!! This team needs a new owner who wants to see this team win, not an owner who just sees the team as another business in their portfolio. I think the current owner owes the fans that much, as they have been suffering for 90 years. It’s really sad knowing that there are some Lions fans who have never seen their team even get close to going to a Super Bowl, let alone winning one.
Second, this team now has no true #1 QB. You had Stafford and were gracious enough to let him go win somewhere else, but now you need to think about how to replace him. All due respect to Jared Goff, but he is not the answer to your problems. The draft this year has some promising QBs, and even the 2023 free agency has many enticing options, so can we see the Lions make a play for one of these quarterbacks? I hope so because this team seems to be heading nowhere fast.
The only way I see this team making a Super Bowl in the next 10 years is if they change owners. Similar to the Carolina Hurricanes of the NHL, the team was horrible and mediocre for many years. Tom Dundon stepped in and bought the team in the mid-2010s, and the team then became one of the best teams in the NHL year in and year out, because Dundon wanted to create a winning culture in the franchise. That is exactly what needs to happen in Detroit if they even want to sniff the possibility of a Super Bowl.
