Five Interesting Things to Watch for in Patriots vs Eagles-Week 2 Preview

In week 1, the Patriots capped their victory over the Washington Football Team with an exciting Rhamondre Stevenson 91-yard touchdown scamper to the house late in the 4th quarter. The team returns to action this evening when they tackle the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field. In this article, we will briefly look at five things to watch for in this contest.
1. Quarterback battle-Mac Jones had a solid week 1 by completing 13 of his 19 passes for 87 yards while Newton played only two series and completed 4 of his 7 passes for 49 yards. Heading into week 2, I think Cam needs to shine in this contest to lock down the number one position. With preseason only 3 games, Newton needs to make throws and get the ball into the end zone to make it clear that he is the number 1 on the chart. Jones has less pressure on him and simply has to build on week 1. If Newton falters then Jones may put himself in a position to climb to number one on the depth chart.

2. Wide receiver question- Nelson Agholor missed last week’s game but should be in line to play after a week of practice. In his absence, Myers and Bourne had short stints in week 1 with only catch each. However, N’Keal Harry had the opportunity to prove his worth by playing into the 3rd quarter but finished disappointedly with only one catch and 4 yards. With more playing time in Week 2 for the group, it will be interesting to see if any of these receivers can put in a stellar performance and separate themselves from the pack.

3. Can I get an encore, Mr. Stevenson?- Rhamondre “showed out” in week 1 with 127 yards and two touchdowns. He looks to be the runner the Pats need to mix in with Damien Harris and Sony Michel. However, the challenge this week for Mr. Stevenson in the lyrics of Jay-Z is “Can I get an encore?” If he does, he almost certainly will nail a spot on this roster.

4. Devin Asiasi-this is not the name Patriots fans will want to hear especially after acquiring the best two tight ends on the market in Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry but both are likely not going to suit up for this game. Henry is just back from a shoulder injury and Smith suffered a low ankle injury in Sunday’s practice and is doubtful for the game. Hopefully, Devin can show some growth and prove that he is the third tight end on the roster.

5. Signs of lockdown defense- with more playing time likely for the starters, it will be interesting to see how the defense fares against Jalen Hurts. J.C. Jackson especially will be under the microscope because of the absence of Stephon Gilmore, and he is playing for more money in his contract year.
