Geno Smith just gave the best answer that we’ve ever heard when getting asked about the Seattle Seahawks offensive drought. Seattle’s offense hasn’t scored a single point in the last six quarters coming into this matchup with the Atlanta Falcons. As you can expect, reporters were wondering if anything in particular was going on with the offense behind the scenes. This resulted in the questions began pouring in.
Smith responded to these questions by saying, “We need to score. We need to score, keep drives alive, get more plays, more opportunities, and just finish drives.” Well, I can’t say I disagree with that statement. The way to become a good offense in the league is by scoring points. Simple as that.
For those of you that might be wondering how the Seahawks haven’t scored a point in this long considering they just lost 27-7, there’s an easy answer. The only seven points they scored against the San Francisco 49ers was on a blocked field goal return. So, besides that, Seattle hasn’t put up points in 92 minutes of game time.
Geno Smith has been very efficient as a passer, but not effective if that makes sense. He’s currently completing 81 percent of his passes on the year but has yet to surpass 200 yards in either game. It’s incredibly clear that this offense doesn’t want the ball getting thrown down the field. The only issue with this strategy is that the Seahawks are getting ZERO help from the run game. Without that, opposing teams can just key in on the short passing game.
Stats Aren’t Backing Seahawks Up
The stats are really starting to show how bad they have been so far. The Seahawks rank dead last in the league when it comes to big plays. They also rank 29th when it comes to total scoring and 31st in total yards throughout just Week 1 and 2.
Head coach Pete Carroll said, “We are just going to take what they give us until they start to play us more in man coverage and up in our faces. It doesn’t make sense just to try and air it out just for the sake of doing that. I’m always going to take what they give us and try to be efficient on offense. That’s the main goal, to be efficient and to move the ball to score.”
For those of you that might be thinking that play calling could the issue, Geno doesn’t think that way. In fact, he doesn’t feel hindered by the plays that the offense is running in the slightest. He made sure to let that sentiment known to the crowd interviewing him and how they are just trying to put the pieces together one by one.
In Week 3, the Seahawks get the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons are currently ranked 22nd in passing yards given up, 27th in points per game allowed and 30th in red zone percentage. Geno and company can take full advantage of this matchup. Hopefully using it to start breaking things open.
